of anti-aging and longevity.

What are Telomeres?

Telomere science is an exciting branch of Nobel prize-winning research brimming with opportunities for finding new cures and treatments for various pathologies.

Prior to the discovery of telomeres, it remained a mystery as to how genetic material was securely conserved during successive cycles of cellular replication.

Telomeres are highly conserved, repeating sequences of DNA and proteins that cap the ends of chromosomes, thereby protecting them from replicative damage – similar to the aglets on the ends of shoelaces that help to prevent fraying.

The Importance of Telomeres

Telomeres are found in all living organisms and are created via an enzyme called telomerase. While telomerase is amply expressed in stem cells and germ cells, it is typically not expressed in somatic cells, or only at very low levels in some.

As telomeres shorten with each successive cycle of cell replication, cellular senescence is signalled once a critical telomere length is reached. Normal, healthy cells typically undergo a finite number of replicative cycles before the cell enters senescence and subsequently becomes destined for apoptosis (cell death). However, certain disease states have been found to correlate with shortening of telomeres and accelerated cellular aging, and further research is increasingly shedding light on the more active role telomeres play in various diseases. Telomere length can therefore be considered a dynamic biomarker of cellular aging.

Telomere Length and Chronic Disease

There is a wealth of research on the association of telomere length with risk of disease, disease progression, and mortality risk. Generally speaking, shortened leukocyte telomere length is associated with an increased risk of mortality in relation to a plethora of specific diseases and organ groups, including cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, and musculoskeletal diseases, as well as COVID-19.
